🏺 Epigraphy: the study of ancient inscriptions
Welcome to www.abjads.org: a window into Hugo Cartwright's research preprint Ordered Set Correspondence (2026).
The paper itself can be described as an information science approach to correspondence, order, and exploratory analysis. The objective of this site, however is to make the epigraphic examples and concepts in the paper easier to understand. We will also describe the epigraphic hypotheses obtained from the paper's results. Just a handful of web pages are enough to achieve this. If you want a more detailed view of the project, the code repository is publicly available on GitLab.
I've deliberately kept as little epigraphy as possible in the preprint to keep it relevant to my experience and skills as a software engineer. Reading epigraphy or linguistic terms in such a paper may seem confusing to "computer people" and that's one reason why I created this website. Hopefully, it will also serve as an introduction for epigraphists and the general public, helping them better understand what I'm working on. It's much more than merely "looking at the alphabet" but the alphabet is precisely what we're going to start with first in the research explainer.
⚠️ Disclaimer It's helpful to know that I'm a software engineer, not a professional epigrapher. Some epigraphy, language -or history- related comments on this site can probably be taken with a pinch of salt, although we do strive to be accurate. Some degree of accuracy is possible, however. Two decades ago, I spent more than seven years in the Levant. Regular camping trips in the deserts surrounding Damascus allowed me to become an amateur epigraphist. Did I just make all that up? Don't take my word for it; see if you can spot my first or last name anywhere on this site (thanks again, Jürg). Despite some background knowledge on my part, the exploratory hypotheses presented on this website and in the study are to be considered an illustrative application of the paper's methodology rather than as definitive, established conclusions.
